Procore vs Buildertrend vs JobTread: The IT Side of Running Construction Software
Every construction software comparison you will read assumes one thing without saying it: that the people using it have a connection. In the office that is true. On a slab in the middle of a lot with no power yet, it is not.
That gap is where construction software either earns its money or quietly gets abandoned. Crews stop entering data in the field, the office re-keys it at night, and within a few months you are paying for a platform that has become a very expensive filing cabinet.
This is not a feature-by-feature review. What follows is the comparison from the side we actually see: what each platform expects of your connectivity and your devices, what none of them solve, and the infrastructure decisions that determine whether the software gets used at all.

The three platforms most Central Florida contractors evaluate are Procore, Buildertrend and JobTread. They are aimed at genuinely different businesses, which makes this an easier choice than most software decisions — provided you are honest about which business you are.
Procore is built for commercial construction and larger general contractors, with the depth and the price to match. Buildertrend is built for residential builders and remodelers, and leans heavily on the homeowner-facing side — selections, change orders, client portal. JobTread is built for contractors who have been running the business on spreadsheets and want real-time job costing without enterprise weight.

A note on prices. We have left figures out deliberately. The gap between these platforms is large and well known, but published numbers move and rarely include implementation, training or the modules you will actually need. Price the configuration you would really run, over three years, including the time to get your crews using it.
The Problem None of Them Solve: Your Job Site Has No Internet
This is the decision that determines whether construction software works for you, and it appears in none of the vendor comparisons.
All three platforms have mobile apps. All three are marketed on the strength of field data capture — daily logs, photos, time, punch lists, inspections. All three assume the field has a usable connection. On a Central Florida job site, that ranges from fine to nonexistent depending on the lot, the phase and the weather.
What actually happens without it
Crews try the app, it hangs on a photo upload, and they go back to texting the super. The daily log gets written in the truck at 5pm from memory rather than in the moment. Photos land in someone’s phone gallery instead of the job record. Nobody makes a decision to abandon the software — it just stops getting used, one frustration at a time.
The result is the failure mode we see most: a firm paying for a platform, with an office team re-entering field data manually, getting almost none of the benefit they bought.
What to do about it
Treat job site connectivity as a line item, not an assumption. Options, roughly in order of cost:
- Cellular hotspots on a business plan, one per active site. Fine for a small crew and a handful of photo uploads; strained by a full trailer of people.
- A trailer-mounted router with a proper external antenna. The difference between a phone hotspot and a decent antenna on a mast is often the difference between usable and not.
- Satellite internet for sites with genuinely no cellular coverage. It has become a realistic option for rural Polk and Osceola sites where it simply was not before.
Whichever you choose, check the app’s offline behaviour before you commit. Some field features queue and sync cleanly when signal returns; others fail in ways crews will not tolerate twice.
Devices: The Field Is Hard on Equipment
Office IT assumes a laptop that lives on a desk. Construction does not. Phones and tablets in the field get dropped, rained on, left in a truck cab in August, and used with dirty hands or gloves.
Two practical points. First, budget for replacement rather than treating each failure as a surprise — field device attrition is a running cost, not an incident. Second, whatever the device, it must have a screen lock and encryption, because it holds client contact details, contracts, pricing and site photos. A tablet lost off a truck bed is a data problem as well as a hardware one.
Photos and Plans Are Bigger Than You Think
Construction generates more image and document volume than almost any other trade. A single active job produces hundreds of progress photos a month, and plan sets and shop drawings are large files that get revised repeatedly.
Two things follow. Storage costs money and grows permanently — check what your platform includes and what overages cost. And uploading that volume over a marginal site connection is exactly the workflow that breaks first.
The Fraud Aimed at Contractors
Construction is targeted for payment fraud, and the method is the same one used against law firms: an attacker gets into an email account and reads until money is about to move.
In construction that means a fake invoice from a supplier whose format they have been studying, or updated banking details for a subcontractor payment, arriving from what looks like the right address at exactly the right point in the job. Progress payments and draw requests are large and predictable, which is what makes the target attractive.
Your project management software does not stop this. Multi-factor authentication on email stops most of it, alerting on mailbox forwarding rules catches the rest early, and a policy of verifying any change to banking details by phone — to a number you already had — closes the gap.
Subcontractor Access Without Giving Away the Business
All three platforms let you bring subs and suppliers into the system, which is genuinely useful and creates a question worth deciding deliberately: what can a sub see?
Get the permission model right at setup. Subs should see their scope, their documents and their schedule — not your margins, your other bids, or your full client list. This is easy to configure at the start and awkward to unwind after everyone is already in there.
The same applies at the other end. When a sub relationship finishes, their access should end with it.
While You Are Thinking About the Site
Two things worth pricing at the same time as the software, because they share the same infrastructure.
Job site cameras. Once a site has a connection, cameras become straightforward, and material and tool theft is a real cost in Central Florida. Cameras also settle disputes about what happened and when, which has a way of paying for itself in a single incident.
Backups of the office side. Your estimating files, contracts and accounting still live in the office. The platform protects what is in the platform — nothing else.

The honest summary: the platform matters less than whether your crews can actually use it in the field. A cheaper system that gets used beats a better one that does not, and the deciding factor is usually the connection, not the software.

- Offline behaviour tested before rollout, not discovered by a crew
- Field devices with screen locks and encryption, and a replacement budget

- Verification by phone for any change to supplier or subcontractor banking details
