Ransomware in Osceola County: What the St. Cloud Attack Means for Kissimmee Businesses
In March 2024 the City of St. Cloud — fifteen minutes from downtown Kissimmee — was hit by ransomware. It is the clearest local example of what these attacks actually look like, and it is worth understanding if you run a business in Osceola County. See the full record of Florida city ransomware attacks →
What Happened
An unauthorized actor had access to City of St. Cloud systems between 17 and 25 March 2024. In April the Hunters International ransomware group claimed responsibility and later published what it said was 1.4 TB of data across roughly 719,000 files. The city took systems offline, brought in third-party cybersecurity specialists, and worked through recovery. Police, Fire Rescue, the Osceola County Tax Collector and utility operations were reported unaffected.
The Part That Took a Year
The attack was in March 2024. It was June 2025 before the confirmed count of people whose health information was affected settled at 7,797. That gap is the part most businesses underestimate: the encryption is over in hours, but the forensics, the notification obligations and the legal exposure run for a year or more afterward.
Why It Matters to You
A city has an IT department, a budget and a legal team. Most Kissimmee businesses have none of those. The same groups that hit municipalities run the same playbook against small and mid-sized companies, because the entry points are identical: an exposed remote-access port, a reused password, an unpatched server, a staff member who clicked. Being smaller is not cover — it usually means being easier.
What Actually Stops This
None of the following is exotic. It is the set of controls that separates a bad afternoon from a business-ending event.
Backups You Have Tested
Offsite, encrypted, and — the part that gets skipped — actually restored from at least once. A backup nobody has tested is a theory. If your only copy sits on the same network as the server it protects, ransomware will encrypt both.
MFA on Everything Exposed
Email, VPN, remote desktop, and any admin console reachable from the internet. Stolen credentials are the most common way in, and multi-factor authentication is the single control that most reliably makes them useless.
No Naked RDP
Remote Desktop published straight to the internet is scanned constantly and is a leading ransomware entry point. It belongs behind a VPN or a managed access broker, never open on a public IP.
Staff Who Recognise the Bait
Most incidents begin with a person, not a firewall. Short, regular phishing training and simulations move that needle more cheaply than any appliance you can buy.
Suspect You Have Been Hit?
Do not power the machines off — that can destroy evidence and, in some cases, keys held in memory. Disconnect them from the network instead, leave them running, and stop anyone from logging in. Then call someone. We provide ransomware response for Osceola County businesses, and the first hour matters more than the next ten. Call (321) 221-7117.
